Website Modernization Timisoara — When a Redesign Is Necessary and How to Do It Without Losing SEO
You have a website that “works” — it brings in visitors, maybe even a few leads, and it ranks reasonably well in Google. But it looks like it’s still 2019. Your competitors have redesigned and look 5 years younger. Your conversion rate is below its potential. And you’re starting to hear feedback like: “the site doesn’t load properly on my phone.”
Modernizing an existing website is a more complex job than building a new one — precisely because you have something to lose: the SEO rankings built up over months or years of optimization. A botched modernization can wipe out those rankings. A proper one preserves and amplifies them. At ProjectMedia, we have completed dozens of modernization and redesign projects over 19 years in business — we know exactly how to handle the transition the right way.
“Design is the silent ambassador of your brand. But a silent ambassador with outdated credentials loses deals.” — Paul Rand (adapted)
Websites that lose their SEO rankings after an unplanned redesign need 6-12 months on average to win them back. A redesign with an integrated SEO strategy can improve rankings within the first 3 months. (Source: Moz, 2024)

When You Need Modernization vs. a New Website
When modernization is enough
Modernization (a design update without changing the underlying structure) is enough if: your current URL structure is sound and has built up authority, your existing content is high quality and up to date, the platform (WordPress, Shopify, Webflow) is still a good fit, and the problems are mainly visual and speed-related. A preliminary technical audit settles the question — details on our SEO audit Timisoara page.
When a complete rebuild is necessary
A complete rebuild is necessary if: the platform is outdated or unsupported (old PHP, a proprietary CMS with no support), the URL structure is fundamentally flawed and cannot be fixed with simple redirects, or the business has changed radically (new brand, new business model, new audience). Even in that case, an SEO migration is mandatory.
Risks of a Botched Redesign: Losing Authoritative URLs
If your existing URLs change in the new design without correct 301 redirects, all the Google rankings earned by those pages are lost instantly. Google finds no redirect and treats the new URLs as brand-new pages — with no authority and no indexing.
Losing backlinks
The backlinks you have earned over time point to specific URLs on your website. If those URLs disappear without a redirect, the backlinks lose all their value. A link building profile built over years evaporates in a 5-minute launch.
Undetected post-launch technical issues
A new theme can introduce errors that are invisible at launch: JavaScript elements that block crawling, pages that don’t get indexed correctly, duplicate content generated by the new template system, broken images.
Speed regression
A new design does not automatically mean a faster website. Modern themes with animations and multiple fonts can be slower than the old theme. Without checking the PageSpeed score before and after, you can end up with a prettier but slower website — penalized directly by Google. Speed optimization has to be an integral part of any redesign.
67% of websites that migrate to a new platform suffer a significant drop in SEO rankings within the first 3 months. 89% of that loss can be prevented with a migration that uses correct 301 redirects and active post-launch monitoring. (Source: Moz Migration Guide, 2024)
Our Modernization Process That Keeps Your SEO Intact
Step 1: SEO audit of the current website
Before any change, we map out which pages get organic traffic, which URLs have backlinks, which rankings need protecting and which technical errors already exist. This stage determines the migration strategy. Learn more on our SEO audit Timisoara page.
Step 2: The SEO migration plan
We document every URL that changes and its corresponding 301 redirect. We plan the new structure to keep as much of the old one as possible, minimizing the number of redirects needed.
Step 3: The new design in Figma — approved before implementation
Complete mockups of the new design are presented and approved before any code is written. Mobile versions included — mobile-first is our standard.
Step 4: Implementation in a staging environment
The new website is built in parallel with the existing one, on a staging (test) domain. Visitors see no changes until the final launch.
Step 5: Pre-launch testing
We verify that all 301 redirects work correctly, the PageSpeed score is equal to or better than the old version (target > 85/100), there are no 404 errors, all forms and features work properly, and the mobile version is flawless. This includes checking Core Web Vitals.
Step 6: Controlled launch and monitoring
At launch: a new sitemap submitted to Google Search Console and active monitoring for 30 days. Any ranking regression is investigated immediately.
Websites migrated correctly (with an SEO strategy and complete 301 redirects) recover their original rankings in 2-3 months and, in 80% of cases, surpass them within 6 months, thanks to the new, better-performing platform. (Source: Ahrefs Case Studies, 2024)

Frequently Asked Questions About Website Modernization
How long does a website modernization take?
Similar to building a new website: 3-6 weeks depending on complexity. Initial audit (2-3 days), design (1-2 weeks), implementation and testing (1-2 weeks), launch and monitoring (ongoing).
Can I keep my existing content in the new design?
Yes — we migrate all the content from your current website. You don’t have to rewrite your copy from scratch if it is good quality. We can re-optimize existing content as part of the process.
What happens if we still lose rankings after the modernization?
Active monitoring during the first 30 days catches any regression quickly. We investigate the cause and fix it before it turns into a major problem. In 19 years in business, we have not recorded any significant post-redesign ranking losses on projects that followed our process.
Can the website stay live while the modernization is in progress?
Yes — we work exclusively on staging. Your current website stays live and fully functional until the new design launches. The switchover takes just a few minutes. Contact us for details.
